Treatments

BOTOX®

BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles to temporarily treat moderate to severe frown lines. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes those lines to form between the brows.

Dysport®

Prescription Dysport® is an injection to temporarily improve the look of your moderate to severe frown lines without changing the look of the whole face. The untreated facial muscles still work normally, allowing you to freely show facial expressions, such as smiling, in untreated areas.

Restylane® / Perlane®

The Restylane family of products includes Restylane, Restylane–L, Perlane, and Perlane-L. These products can be used individually to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).

JUVEDERM®

With long-lasting JUVEDERM XC, you can treat those parentheses lines on the sides of your nose and mouth for up to 1 year with 1 treatment.

Sculptra®

Discover anti-age for the modern age.

Sculptra® injections are used cosmetically for facial contouring and anti-aging. Sculptra® injections work by growing your own body’s collagen in areas of subcutaneous tissue loss to help lift jowls and smooth lines.  It is sometimes referred to as “liquid face lift”. Sculptra® injections can also be used to treat acne scarring.

Sculptra® injections are an advanced anti-aging technique. Because Sculptra® works by growing your body’s collagen, the process is gradual over a period of 4 to 8 weeks with peak collagen growth at 12 weeks. Results typically last 2 – 3 years. Dr. Cavalier recommends treatments every 10-12 weeks until the desired effect is achieved. Side effects are minimal and include discomfort (which is minimized with a topical anesthetic), redness, swelling and bruising.

Radiesse®

Radiesse® in an injectable gel used to soften moderate to severe lines around the mouth such as "parentheses lines" and "marionette lines". Radiesse® can also be used for facial contouring and lifting of jowls. Radiesse® is a long lasting dermal filler that is artistically administered by the experienced team at Atlantic Shore Dermatology.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a long term solution to unwanted face or body hair. At Atlantic Shore Dermatology we use the effective and safe LightSheer diode laser to treat unwanted hair growth. This medical grade laser can be used almost anywhere on the face or body with the best results achieved with dark hair on light skin.

For best results laser treatments should be performed monthly for 3-5 months due to the natural hair growth cycle. Affordable hair removal packages are available.

Do I shave before my laser hair removal appointment? What about waxing?

You should shave the area 1-2 days prior to your appointment. Laser works by destroying the hair bulb deep below the skin and side effects are minimized by having the hairs clean shaven or short. Please also avoid plucking or waxing any areas you wish to be treated for at least 4 weeks.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

The laser does deliver a pulse of energy that can sting so we recommend use of a topical numbing cream prior to your appointment to minimize discomfort. This cream can be prescribed to you prior to your appointment.

Does laser hair removal have any side effects?

Your safety is our first concern at Atlantic Shore Dermatology. Laser hair removal is a procedure that should only be performed at a reputable medical facility by a trained provider like the medical team at Atlantic Shore Dermatology. Common side effects include redness, swelling and discomfort. Protective eyewear is used to ensure safety.

Brown Spot Removal

Facial Veins, Rosacea, and Pigmented Lesions Using the Safe and Effective VersaPulse® Laser

The VersaPulse® laser utilizes a green-light wavelength that safely targets superficial blood vessels and pigmented lesions. This laser uses a variable pulse width that allows selective treatments of a wide variety of vascular conditions with minimal bruising or down-time.

This variable pulsed technology allows the provider or laser specialist to safely treat the patient's vascular lesions without harming the surrounding skin cells. Vascular and pigmented conditions the VersaPulse® laser can effectively treat include:

  • Facial Telangiectasia (broken capillaries)
  • Rosacea management (a skin disease where redness and flushing of the face occurs); Cherry Hemangiomas (red moles)
  • Port Wine Stains (red birthmark)
  • Vascular birthmarks
  • Solar Lentigines (benign brown spots, freckles)
  • Unwanted Tattoos

FAQ's about the VersaPulse® Laser

The word LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Today's advanced laser technology allows us to safely and effectively treat many benign skin lesions.

How does a VersaPulse® laser work?

The VersaPulse® laser uses an intense beam of light to gently remove unwanted, damaged, or diseased cells/lesions without harming the surrounding healthy cells. The VersaPulse® laser's green-light energy is delivered in short, adjustable pulses, which minimizes bruising and discomfort.

How many treatments are required?

This depends on several factors such as: size, location, depth, and the color of your vascular or pigmented lesion. Spider Veins on the face and Cherry Hemangiomas generally diminish with one or two treatments, while darker or deeper birthmarks may require multiple treatments. Port Wine Stains and Hemangiomas are safely treated and respond well with a series of laser treatments.

Rosacea is a disease that requires continual management. However, the VersaPulse® laser dramatically reduces the redness and flushing nature that Rosacea causes. Pigmented lesions require 1 to 3 sessions for safe removal. Treatments should be placed 4 to 6 weeks apart to allow your body the adequate time to remove the maximum amount of targeted cells. You will continue to see a lightening of your lesions after each treatment as your body disposes of the coagulated cells that have been treated with the VersaPulse® laser.

Are VersaPulse® laser treatments safe?

VersaPulse® lasers have been used in thousands of treatments. When properly performed by a trained provider or laser specialist, the VersaPulse® treatments are extremely safe and effective. There are many benefits to VersaPulse® laser surgery: Immediate results are visible; there is little, if any, discomfort; no numbing cream or injections are necessary for most patients; low risk of bruising; minimal swelling; and once the lesions are adequately treated, they usually do not return.

Do VersaPulse® laser treatments hurt?

Some patients say they feel a slight sting, like the snap of a rubber band on the skin. Post treatment sensations are similar to a mild feeling of sunburn. The VersaPulse® uses a special "chilled tip" to cool the skin during treatment -- this makes the treatment more tolerable as well as protects the skin. Most treatments do not require anesthetics.

What results can you expect?

Most patients will see improvement in their vascular lesions after the first treatment. This improvement can be quite dramatic. However, as with any laser procedure, there is always a possibility that only minor changes will occur, and in rare cases, there is no response.

Tattoo Removal

The VersaPulse® laser for tattoo removal is the gold standard and provides amazing results. It
offers 3 different wavelengths (qs1064nm, qs755nm, qs532nm) to target all colors of tattoo ink.
As with many cosmetic procedures, the number of treatments needed to lighten the tattoo will
vary based on many factors:

  • Age and location of the tattoo
  • Depth and color of the ink
  • Patient's skin type (natural color of the skin)
  • The strength of the patient's immune system
  • The laser technician's knowledge and experience

These factors, combined, all play a major role in the tattoo removal process

How does the VersaPulse® Laser remove a tattoo?

The VersaPulse® laser utilizes a process called Selective Photothermolysis. The word photothermolysis comes from three Greek root words: "photo" meaning light; "thermo" meaning heat; and "lysis" meaning destruction. Therefore, Selective photothermolysis refers to the precise targeting of a structure or tissue by using a specific wavelength of light. The energy directed into the target area produces sufficient heat to damage the target, allowing the surrounding areas to remain relatively undamaged.

The VersaPulse® laser removes a tattoo by using one of it's three specific wavelengths of light (energy) which is attracted to and absorbed by a specific tattoo-ink's color underneath the skin. The absorption of this energy causes the ink to heat-up and it is, literally, fragmented into microscopic particles that are, over a period of time, slowly taken away by the immune system's macrophages (scavenger cells) to the lymphatic system. This immune response is the mechanism that actually removes the tattoo! More simply put: the VersaPulse® laser safely obliterates the ink, and the body's immune system safely removes the tattoo.

How many laser treatments are required to remove a tattoo?

This depends on several factors such as: size, location, depth, color, and the frequency in which the tattoo is treated. Treatments should be placed 4 to 8 weeks apart to allow your body to remove the maximum amount of targeted ink particles. In between treatments, your body will continue to absorb the fragmented ink and the tattoo fades.

On average, a tattoo can be removed in 5 to 20 sessions depending on the factors mentioned above. Please note: the removal of any tattoo is a slow process by which your body's immune system does the work. It will take months for your body to do this work effectively. It is our goal to remove your tattoo in a medically sound and safe manner. We tailor each treatment session to minimize the risk of scarring and undesirable skin-pigment changes while maximizing your results.

Are VersaPulse® Laser treatments safe?

VersaPulse® lasers have been used successfully in thousands of tattoo removal treatments. When performed by a trained dermatology provider or laser specialist, the VersaPulse® treatments are one of the safest and most effective treatments available to date.

Fractionated Resurfacing

ProFractional Therapy is a laser procedure with little downtime, used for improving the overall appearance of your skin. ProFractional uses a tiny laser beam to treat thousands of pinpoint areas of your skin. Because only a fraction of your skin is directly treated with the laser, the surrounding untreated tissue promotes rapid healing. This skin's wound healing response creates new collagen which add firmness and resilience to the skin.

Laser Peels

A Laser Peel can be very successful at reducing or eliminating wrinkles and pigment irregularity, and in fact it is the best way to address the problematic lines that occur around the mouth and eyes.

Silk Peel

Silk Peel is a new microdermabrasion and infusion treatment that pairs exfoliation with targeted infusion to the outer layer of skin.

Blu-U Treatment

The Levulan Kerastick for Topical Solution plus blue light illumination using the BLU-U® Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator is indicated for the treatment of minimally to moderately thick actinic keratosis (Grade 1 or 2) of the face or scalp.
